How to repair a split wooden floorboard
Sometimes, moisture or excessive dryness can cause wooden floorboards to split. If the damage is minor, it may be possible to repair the split board in situ, without having to take up the floorboard completely.
You can find everything you need for this small job from a good DIY or hardware store.
Fill the split
Start by filling the split with epoxy wood filler to prevent it from widening. Try to pick a product that closely matches the floor colour, as you won’t be able to stain it later. Mix the filler with hardener as per the instructions provided with the product, and fill in the split using a putty knife. Quickly scrape away the excess before it has the chance to harden.
Sand the repair
Manually sand the board to remove the residual hardened putty. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the sanding dust.
Brush over the area with a coat of clear finish with a paintbrush. If the repaired area does not match the surrounding boards and is very obvious, add a small amount of wood stain pigment to a clear finish product and brush on one or two coats until you are happy that the repair is not visible.
More serious splits and damage
If the split to the board is very serious and it appears that the damp has spread into the wood, you may need to have the board replaced. Unless you are a DIY expert, it is probably best to use a professional company who specialise in restoring wood floors. An experienced contractor will remove and replace the board, and then refinish the whole floor for you so that the repair is invisible.
If the damage has occurred because the floor is underneath a window, check that the window does not leak in very wet weather and take steps to have it repaired if necessary, before you have your floor refinished.
